If you're evaluating outdoor lighting companies, here's one question that will tell you almost everything: walk me through how you'll design my scene — not what products you'll use, but what experience you're trying to create. The companies thinking in fixtures will answer with spec sheets. The designers thinking in scenes will ask how you use your outdoor space and start telling you a story about what your backyard could feel like. Hire the one telling the story.

The homeowner gets the job. The fixtures are installed. The lights turn on. And something is missing. They can't quite explain it. It looks fine. It's lit. But it doesn't feel like the photos they were shown, or the neighbor's yard they admired. What they're missing is the design intent. They got fixtures without a scene. Technically correct. Experientially flat. This is the gap between a $5,000 job and a $50,000 job — and it is not primarily a gap in materials. It's a gap in thinking.

A scene is not a list of fixture placements. A scene is an experience — the way light moves across a property, the contrast between illuminated focal points and intentional shadow, the warmth a family feels when they step outside after dinner and the backyard is already waiting for them. When I walk a property, I'm not counting lights. I'm building an experience in my head before I've measured a single distance. I'm looking at the focal point — the tree, the architectural detail, the water feature — and then I'm going inside it. I'm getting under the tree canopy to read branch structure. I'm figuring out where light will pass through cleanly and where it will create hot spots. I'm thinking about what the scene looks like from the front door, from the back porch, from the street. That kind of thinking requires more lights in some places and fewer in others. It requires a designer who is willing to tell a client the design needs three more fixtures than budgeted — because the scene demands it, and putting your name on an underwhelming result is not an option.

Here's how it works in the transaction. A company comes out, walks the property, and starts counting. Ten downlights on the roofline. Six path lights. Two uplights on the oak tree. Each fixture has a price. The math adds up. The proposal goes out. It's logical. It's clean. And it misses the point entirely. When a designer is thinking in terms of fixtures, they're doing arithmetic — not design. They're optimizing for margin on individual items rather than asking the question that actually matters: what does this property feel like at 10pm on a Saturday night?

There's a mistake that most outdoor lighting companies make — and most homeowners never catch it until the job is done and something feels off. They're selling fixtures. You're buying a feeling. The disconnect between those two things is where most outdoor lighting falls short.
